Hayward church asks for help in face of foreclosure

HAYWARD — A sign for 1st Capitol Realty is posted outside Upper Room Pentecostal Church on Harris Road to let the community know just how dire the situation is for members struggling to hold on to their house of worship.

Even under Thursday's cloudy skies, the inside of the 55,000-square-foot building was bathed with light through natural skylights, and the flowers painted around the altar and windows by the pastor's daughter, Tammy Beltran, were in bloom.

Upstairs, board members met with a financial expert to figure out a way to save their beloved building, which has lapsed into foreclosure.

"If I lose my house, my wife andI can move on. We can survive. But this church is here for the community, and that's what breaks my heart. I don't want to feel that I failed them, so I am trying the hardest I can," Pastor Rodrigo Beltran said.

Embattled Karzai Assesses Corruption, Taliban, U.S. Policy

Do you think Musharraf will do something about it, send forces into the problematic border areas?

A. We have to end extremism. We have to end support for extremism in the region. Unless we do that, the picture is one of doom and gloom, for Pakistan, and as a consequence for Afghanistan.

Q. When I interviewed former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto in December, she said to me, "I feel they are going to come knocking at my door one night."

A. Unfortunately, her death, the way it happened, proves her point. That's the irony. That's the sad thing about her death. She predicted something, and she proved right in that prediction. So it must be listened to. We cannot use extremism as a tool for any purpose. It will hurt us eventually, as it has begun to hurt Pakistan.
